City Commission Regular Meeting Brief for July 25, 2023 - Tentative Millage Rate for FY 2024

City Commission Approves Tentative Millage Rate

The City Commission voted in favor of establishing a tentative operating millage rate of 5.865 for the fiscal year of 2024. This proposed rate represents a decrease from the current fiscal year's 5.875 millage rate. The resolution empowers the City Commission to advise the Property Appraiser about this proposed rate. Cooper City’s next fiscal year will commence on Oct. 1, 2023, and will run through Sept. 30, 2024. However, it is essential to note that the tentative millage rate is not the final one that will appear on Cooper City property owners' tax bills in the upcoming fall.

Cooper City property owners are urged to carefully review their Truth in Millage (TRIM) Notice, also known as the Notice of Proposed Property Taxes, upon receipt via mail. The TRIM Notice will contain information about the tentative millage rate submitted by Cooper City, as well as the rates set by other taxing authorities, all specified within the notice. For essential insights and details concerning your forthcoming TRIM Notice, please visit the Broward County Property Appraiser's website at https://bcpa.net/trim.asp.

Cooper City residents are encouraged to take part of the upcoming public hearings, where millage and budget will be discussed. The first public hearing date to consider the budget and millage rates is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. at City Commission Chambers. The second public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. at City Commission Chambers.

The City Commission Approves Preliminary Fire Assessment Rate

The City Commission has formally approved the preliminary fire assessment rate of 81% of the fire cost for the upcoming 2024 fiscal year. However, it is vital for all Cooper City property owners to be aware that there is still a possibility for the fire assessment rate to be adjusted lower for fiscal year 2024. The final determination will be made after the City Commission thoroughly reviews the proposed budget for the said fiscal year.

City Commission Passes Resolution 23-12

The City Commission approved a resolution enabling the execution of an agreement among the City, the Broward Sheriff's Office, and Renaissance Charter School to avail school resource officer services. Through this agreement, the City will be reimbursed $199,466 for the incurred expenses related to the position, which represents the entire cost of the position.
