Cooper City Officially Opens Renovated Playground at "City Mike" Park
On Wednesday, April 30, 2025, Cooper City proudly celebrated the grand reopening of the renovated playground at Michael D. Riordan “City Mike” Park. The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by community members, City officials, and staff, marking another step forward in enhancing Cooper City's parks and recreational spaces.
City Manager Alex Rey opened the event by highlighting the City’s continued investment in public spaces, noting that the project was made possible in part by a $112,500 grant from the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program (FRDAP). He recognized Joshua Rhodes for project management and Renee Wilson for her successful efforts in securing grant funding. The total cost of the new GameTime playground and shade structure was $237,425.
Mayor James Curran emphasized the significance of the playground’s inclusive design, which promotes physical activity, nature engagement, and accessibility for children of all abilities. He proudly accepted an award on behalf of the City from Natalia Cuervo of Playcore and GameTime, recognizing the playground as a model of excellence.
With excitement and gratitude, attendees gathered to cut the ceremonial ribbon and officially open the new playground. The City Commission was joined by the daughter and son of Michael D. Riordan. It was an inspiring tribute to the legacy of the man who was affectionately known as “City Mike.”
