Fond Farewell: Recognizing Captain Christopher De Giovanni
It was a bittersweet moment at the top of the City Commission Regular Meeting on Tuesday, February 12, 2025. The Commission led our community in thanking and wishing Captain Christopher De Giovanni much success after providing outstanding service and dedication, as BSO Cooper City District Police Chief, for more than four years. Captain De Giovanni is set to be promoted to the rank of Major within the Broward Sheriff’s Office and will assist the Sheriff in overseeing the agency’s north region.
Since arriving in Cooper City on October 24, 2020, Captain De Giovanni has worked tirelessly with our City Commission and staff to enhance public safety, strengthen the City’s partnership with the Broward Sheriff’s Office, and address community concerns. His tenure saw a decline in crime, with vehicle burglaries dropping from 136 in 2020 to 45 in 2024, equating to a more than 70% reduction. Residential burglaries saw similar improvements, decreasing from over 30 incidents in 2020 to at total of 10 in 2024. These reductions, combined with the launch of the city’s Real-Time Crime Center and a strategic four-phased technology plan, have positioned Cooper City as a model for public safety innovation.
Beyond crime prevention, De Giovanni worked with his team to redefine community engagement between our residents and the BSO District team, introducing initiatives such as Cooper City’s first-ever escape room, the popular “Get-the-Scoop” event, and Operation Front Door. His leadership also brought improvements in traffic enforcement, increased citations for aggressive driving, and a strengthened Code Enforcement team that continues to play a vital role in Cooper City's revitalization efforts.
Captain De Giovanni will officially depart on February 22 and will assist City Manager Alex Rey in helping select a successor to help prepare the district for continued success.
Reflecting on his time in Cooper City, Captain De Giovanni shared, “I believed in Cooper City, I believed in the city’s relationship with the Broward Sheriff’s Office, and I believed in the team that was here. My goal was to act as a faithful ambassador—listening, advocating, and adjusting our operations to meet real community needs. Together, we accomplished so much, and I will always be proud of what we built.”
The City of Cooper City extends its deepest gratitude to Captain De Giovanni for his service, leadership, and dedication to the safety of our residents. While he will be missed, his impact on our community will be felt for years to come.
